CMHC Granville Island has two exciting leasing opportunities in the Public Market building located at 1689 Johnston Street.  We have two turn-key standalone retail booths available to lease and therefore we are looking for two different pre-packaged food business concepts with innovative, unique and high-quality food offerings that will complement and enhance the current culinary options in the Public Market and on Granville Island.  

With one of the highest retail sales per square foot ratios and visitor counts in Greater Vancouver, Granville Island provides an outstanding business opportunity. Located in an urban, waterfront location with a variety of restaurant and food experiences, performing arts companies and theatre venues, artist & maker studios, marina and water activities, and ample outdoor public space regularly animated by the visiting public, buskers and arts & culture programming and events, Granville Island continues to be a well-loved destination for locals and a top tourism destination for visitors from around the world.

Granville Island Public Market is a Vancouver staple with 50 permanent vendors consisting of a vibrant collection of grocery, specialty food shops, ready to eat food & drink options, and public indoor and outdoor seating. The available premises, benefit from high traffic locations within the Public Market quick service food hall. Public Market tenancies benefit from access to shared common area facilities including public washrooms.

This leasing opportunity is managed through an Expressions of Interest (EOI) process whereby applications are submitted and reviewed by the landlord CMHC and a tenant is selected. 

As part of the EOI online application, proponents must submit a business plan (in PDF format) up to a maximum of ten (10) pages and must include the following:

      • the pre-packaged food business concept and history

      • the proposed list of items/offerings for sale

      • the proposed branding and signage plans

      • proposed layout of products (note if the concept is dependant on having access to a hand sink)

      • the brand’s marketing strategy to drive customer traffic and sales (including social media)

      • 5 year financial/sales projections

      • breakdown of the ownership & operating structure

      • the details of the skills, knowledge and experience of the owners

      • the staffing plan (required to be open 7 days a week from 9am-6pm)

      • operational & financial history for existing locations and/or markets 

      • demonstrated participation in any events or community initiatives, if applicable

    Important to Note:

    Due to the fact that the retail booths are prebuilt/turn-key and already placed in their permanent locations we will not be conducting onsite tours for this opportunity. You are welcome to go onsite yourself to have a look at them in person between 9am-6pm, 7 days a week when the Public Market is open to the public.

        • a business concept which enhances the Public Market and the Granville Island experience

        • be locally owned and operated with already proven customer base and sales

        • an offering which promotes high quality and fresh local and/or organic ingredients

        • an accessible price point

        • an operation which functions well in a small space

        • an operation that does not involve cooking/warming or food preparation due to the limited size/facilities, and is not meant for immediate consumption.

        • submitted an online EOI application with a business plan as outlined below

      The following will not be considered for this leasing opportunity:

          • national/international chains or franchises

          • if the product requires on-site cooking/warming or on-site preparation

          • any business that is not primarily pre-packaged food products

          • businesses that cannot commit to operating/being open to the public 7 days/week from 9am-6pm
